Most new moms have woken up to a messy, wet bed, wondering exactly which part is leaking—their overfilled breasts adjusting to milk coming in, their C-section scar seeping, and the mass exodus of everything necessary for growing a baby from the vagina, usually lots of blood. And celebrities are no different, as a super honest Chrissy Teigen showed her own leaky boobs in her recent postpartum Instagram post. 

In her photo, still looking more glam than we could hope to postpartum, she has on a midi-length black dress and sweater, and a hat concealing her face. She has liquid on the dress on both breasts, and lower down as well, showing the hot mess that can be the first few days and weeks after birth. Postpartum leakage is real, and Teigen isn’t shying away from showing it.

She’s holding some sort of shake which, if she’s like us, is keeping her awake with a bit of caffeine, and the caption reads, “omw to bandage together both my wound and 3.8 second clips of Beyonce performing in Dubai until I get a full hbo special.”

Moms are there for both her real-life post, but also in awe of how she’s looking so put together in spite of the leaking. One posts, “Love that you are normalizing leaking through everything in the first weeks postpartum. You wake up at night and you’re like “Is it pee? Is it milk? Or is it sweat?” So many body fluid options 😂. Thank you for sharing.” Another says, “Nothing says postpartum authenticity like milk stains!” Another commiserates, “The soggy stage.. everything is soggy ❤️.”

Teigen welcomed her third baby, posting a sweet sibling picture announcing her baby’s girl’s name, Esti Maxine, with husband John Legend. “Daddy sheds nightly tears of joy seeing Luna and Miles so full of love, and I am learning you still need diapers with a c section!? We are in bliss. Thank you for all the love and well wishes – we feel it all! X,” she wrote in her birth announcement.

Moms who have experienced loss also recognize this as a triumphant moment, as Esti is a rainbow baby, born after the family’s loss of baby Jack, born still, at 20 weeks in 2020. She’s publicly shared her journey to become pregnant again via IVF. Esti’s name, which means “star,” aligns perfectly with her sister Luna’s.

Teigen’s journey to conceive and deliver a healthy baby after a stillbirth is one fraught with emotional challenges for many. The risk is two to 10  times higher for another stillbirth after the first one, but luckily most women who want to go on to conceive again and deliver a healthy baby, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. They also provide multiple resources for parents who have experienced stillbirth and need support.

Teigen’s story of hope inspires other mamas on their fertility journeys, who are even hoping to one day end up in that soggy postpartum stage she has so honestly shared.
