Experiencing skin flare-ups? This pregnancy-safe skincare brand is for you
These skin serums work serious magic. ✨
When you’re on the market for pregnancy-safe skincare, it can feel like a steep learning curve at a time when you already have so much on your plate. But, trust us, you aren’t the first—and there are great solutions out there for your skincare woes.
Who else thought they were past the worst of hormonal skin outbreaks around the time they graduated high school? Yeah, it can be an unwelcome surprise to wake up and discover a new blemish (or two or three) on your face when you are already well into adulthood—but the cause of this shouldn’t actually be all that surprising. Just like when those teenage hormones were flooding your body, the new surge of hormones during pregnancy can also do a real number on your skin.
“Hormonal changes, and, of course, all the ways your life is changing, can lead to some unpleasant skin changes during pregnancy,” says Diana Spalding, midwife and writer of The Mother Guide to Becoming Mama. “It’s so easy to get dehydrated during pregnancy, which can lead to issues like dryness and itchiness. And nights spent tossing and turning (because how is anyone supposed to sleep with all those sweet baby kicks?!) can lead to dark circles.”
So, that’s the bad news. The good news is that, well, you’ve come a long way since reading those questionable DIY beauty tips in the pages of Seventeen. Still, it can be hard to know what pregnancy-safe skincare products are effective at combatting acne, dry skin or other flare-ups. Or, at least, it was until Versine was created.
Like so many of the best products on the market, Versine was borne from a real mama’s frustration: When Jennie Gao was on the hunt for pregnancy-safe skincare products, she was disappointed to learn how many supposedly “natural” options still included cosmetic ingredients that aren’t recommended during pregnancy or while nursing.
The irony is that right when she needed effective skincare products the most, so many options were off the table.
Inspired to create skincare products that expectant mamas could truly trust, Gao worked with both dermatologists and OBGYNs to develop two amazing multi-tasking skin serums—one for all skin types and one that is formulated specifically for oily, acne-prone skin.
Just as important as what’s in the serums is what Versine left out…
- Instead of retinol or retinoids, Versine uses niacinamide to smooth wrinkles, reduce hyperpigmentation, treat acne and minimize pores.
- Instead of benzoyl peroxide, Versine uses azelaic acid to combat blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts and acne scarring.
- Instead of hydroquinone, Versine uses Vitamin C to neutralize free radicals, diminish fine lines and brighten skin tone.
- Also left out are artificial colors, artificial fragrances, parabens, sulfates, silicones and more—for a completely vegan, consciously-sourced and pregnancy-safe product.
And, while it may seem like it takes a certain kind of magic to create a serum that erases fine lines, minimizes hyperpigmentation and soothes dry skin without compromising on the ingredients, Versine managed to make it happen… Just ask our resident self-professed skincare addict, Shop Editor Sara Goldstein, who tried the Multi-Tasking Serum for Acne-Prone Skin during what she called “a seriously irritating bout of skin issues.”
“From the gorgeous packaging to the divine formulas, it’s not hard to fall in love with Versine,” Sara raves. “Without essential oils or other irritants, Versine helped manage the breakouts without stressing my skin out further. It’s an impressive, lightweight multitasker that sinks in without leaving your face greasy or tight. The smell is super light too—a detail I always appreciate!”
