Getting ready to bring a baby into this world is amazing—and, ahem, expensive. Who knew someone so tiny could have so many costs associated with them (said lovingly, of course)? But don’t despair—there are ways to save money (hello, hand-me-downs!) that will allow you to focus more on the joy of having a baby and less on the stress of the finances involved. And the savings can start as early as pregnancy. A significant cost-saving step can be looking into whether or not your birth class is covered by insurance. And there’s good news: It very well might be.

Want even more good news? Your insurance or HSA/FSA may cover The Motherly Birth Class! Our birth class is 100% online, which means you can take it at your own pace, from the comfort of your home. It is non-judgmental, inclusive and evidence-based. And if your insurance covers it, you might not have to pay a dime.

Here’s what you need to know about insurance or HSA/FSA coverage of birth classes.

Are birth classes covered by insurance?

They might be! Insurance coverage varies a lot, but there are indeed many plans that include birth classes. The best thing to do is to call your insurance company and ask. When you call, they may ask you for something called a CPT code (this stands for Current Procedural Terminology code) as well as a diagnosis code. Have those on hand before you call.

The CPT code for childbirth preparation classes is S9436.

The diagnosis code for childbirth education is Z32.2

When you call, your insurance provider will give you the next steps you need for getting your class covered.

Can I use my HSA/FSA for my birth class?

Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts are provided by many employers as part of their benefits package, and allow members to set aside untaxed money to pay for certain health-related expenses—possibly including birth classes.

Just like with insurance, it’s best to start with a call to your HSA/FSA provider to see what they cover, and what steps are necessary. If covered, you will likely have two options: Paying out of pocket and then submitting a receipt for reimbursement, or using an HSA/FSA credit card to pay directly.

What is a letter of medical necessity?

Sometimes insurance companies and HSA/FSA providers require a letter of medical necessity from your provider. This states your provider feels that a birth class is an important part of your care. They should have a letter they can quickly fill out for you at your next appointment.

What is an itemized receipt?

To be reimbursed for medical-related expenses, you often need to submit a receipt. If you are trying to have The Motherly Birth Class reimbursed, here is the info you may need:

  • Patient’s name: (That’s you)
  • Provider’s name or name of the educator: Motherly, Inc. (Our address is 6300 N Sagewood Drive, STE H242, Park City, UT 84098, if they need to know)
  • Date of service: The date(s) you took the class
  • Type of service: Childbirth education class
  • Cost: $80

The Motherly Birth Class will come with a completion certificate that you may be able to share with your insurance or HSA/FSA carrier. Once you’ve confirmed that your insurance or HSA/FSA will cover your birth class, it’s time to sign up and let the real fun begin. And if you’ve already started our class, you can go check and see if this class is covered by your insurance. Good luck!
