(Personally, as a breastfeeding mom, nothing broke my heart more than pumping and dumping because I didn’t have a safe way to keep my milk cold.)

That’s why one must-have on the list of breastfeeding products is a cooler bag for that liquid gold. But, as is often the case for busy moms on the go, there are endless choices! How long can breastmilk even be in a cooler? What should you look for in a breastmilk cooler bag? Let’s unpack and get some answers.

How long can breastmilk be stored in a cooler bag?

According to the CDC, “Breastmilk can be stored in an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours when you are traveling.” And, the CDC adds, as soon as you’ve arrived to your destination, the breastmilk should be used, refrigerated, or frozen immediately.

So knowing that you can pump and safely keep your milk for future use, investing in a good breastmilk cooler bag is key if you want to continue to breastfeed when you’re away from your baby.

What should you look for in a breastmilk cooler bag?

Functionality, for one. For example, some bags hold six bottles or more. Others only hold one or two, or don’t even hold bottles at all and are only good for storing bags of breastmilk. Depending on your needs and budget, you might want to splurge on a high-end luxury cooler bag, or opt for a low-cost option that works for when you’re out of the house for just an hour or two.

Also, some breast milk cooler bags only fit certain brands of bottles, while others provide more room, fit all types of brands, and can even double as lunch totes or wine bottle coolers as well. With that said, here’s a list of breastmilk cooler bags we love that range from fancy to simple, large to small, and even skip the “bag” component altogether!

5 guided journals that would make a great gift for any mama https://www.mother.ly/health-wellness/self-care/guided-journal-for-moms/ Tue, 06 Dec 2022 19:00:40 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=151826 Once you become a mom, it rarely seems like you have any time for yourself—I get it. All the things that you once seemed to manage on your plate have become scattered. The things that once brought you joy now seem like a task. How you once poured into yourself has fallen to the wayside. Again, I get it. But being intentional with your self-care is important, mama. And what better way to do that than with a guided journal?

Journaling has always been a love of mine—something that has helped me connect with my inner self and navigate through many emotions. Perhaps now that I’m a mom, journaling is even more important to me than it has ever been. Yet, as many mamas know, it has often been a challenge making time for myself and the things that I love.

Related: My gratitude journal helps me find balance in this busy season of motherhood

But that’s when my love for guided journals was discovered. Guided journaling has many benefits, and I find that it has been quite easier than freestyle journaling. Having focused prompts already laid out for me has made my journaling process much more rewarding—and much more manageable amongst all the other tasks that I have on my plate.

And what makes it even better is having a mom journal that’s specifically catered toward the pregnancy and postpartum experiences. These guided journals have helped me not only connect with myself on a deeper level, but also navigate this newfound identity that I have gained as a mama.

Related: 45 simple self-care practices for busy mamas

While most moms likely own a baby memory book to document their child’s first few years of life, guided journals for the postpartum period can be used to document the mother’s journey—and can serve as a cherisable token to look back on years down the line. I took the liberty of putting together a list of guided journals for mothers. And mama, my advice to you? Treat yourself—because you deserve it.

5 guided journal suggestions for moms

The Healthy Motherhood Journal

This is the first journal I purchased after giving birth—and it has truly been an anchor within my first year of being a mom. Even now that my child is nearing the age of two, the reflections in this journal still do so much to ground me in my motherhood journey. The depth and intimacy of the questions really beckon you to get vulnerable with a lot of often unspoken topics in motherhood—from reflecting on your labor and delivery to addressing the changes within your marriage to thinking about how your parenting style differs from how you were parented. One thing I absolutely love is that this journal provides self-care check-ins, nourishment tips and even healthy recipes at the end of every section.

MOMENTS—The Journal For Moms

This guided journal is perfect for those busier moms who have so much on their plate, yet still want to carve out a few minutes for themselves. What I absolutely love about this journal is how quick and easy (yet still effective) it is. It sits on my nightstand, and a mere five minutes at the end of each day is enough to reflect on how the day went and set intentions for the next day. The prompts are the same for each day—having you reflect on how you felt, ways you made time for yourself, what you’re grateful for and how you plan to be intentional moving forward.

Though this journal isn’t specifically curated toward motherhood, it’s still a very effective journal for mamas to reflect on what they’re grateful for—which is an important thing for moms, especially when we get lost in the overwhelming chaos that often accompanies being a parent. With daily affirmations and space to reframe negative thoughts into positive ones, this journal can help to serve as a reminder that even in the midst of everything we may have going on, there is so much to be grateful for.

The Fourth Trimester Journal: Practices and Reflections to Honor Your Journey into Motherhood

From discussing the need for a “MotherNest” (a space for the mama to become) to reflecting on the moment that you feel you were birthed as a mother, this journal will take you to the innermost makings of your thoughts and emotions. The best baby wraps–and expert tips on how to use them https://www.mother.ly/postpartum/postpartum-products/best-baby-wraps/ Wed, 20 Apr 2022 15:57:31 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=93149 Oh, babies. So snuggly. So sweet. So exhausting. In those first months of parenthood you start to wonder if you’ll ever get to do things with both arms ever again. After all, many babies–especially newborns–simply prefer to be held seemingly around the clock. Of course you need a break (and putting them down is always an option) but there’s also a way to keep them close and get stuff done. Enter the baby wrap.

Used for centuries in cultures all around the world, baby wraps (and babywearing in general) are not just a total lifesaver–they’re also an incredible way to bond with your baby. What’s more, they can also reduce crying, help calm colic and may even reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

Most styles are made from a single piece of long cloth that can be tied in a variety of ways to distribute baby’s weight across your hips and torso. Unlike structured carriers, they’re free from any hardware like buckles or clasps that may dig or poke which makes them a great choice for the newborn phase. Recommendations vary from brand to brand, but most baby wraps are designed to be used from infancy through the first year and half or until they reach 25-35 pounds.

Related: 10 ways babywearing benefits both mothers and babies

According to Trained Babywearing Educator, Azja Pryor, “For most new or expecting parents I usually recommend using a wrap for newborns and infants under 6 months. Stretchy wraps in general are incredibly soft and luxurious to the touch, and that feels very natural next to a baby’s delicate skin. For recovering c-section mamas a wrap may feel more comfortable as there’s no waistband, so baby sits higher on the body and away from the incision site.”

What should you look for in a baby wrap?

According to Pryor, there are a few things to take into consideration. First, what climate will you be wearing your baby in? Fabrics vary from brand to brand and style to style, from thicker cotton to lightweight and breathable Modal and bamboo fabrics. If you’re living in a warm climate or have a summer baby, you may want to opt for the latter to keep you both comfortable.

Another thing to keep in mind is the weight limit. If you plan to use it into the toddler years, go for a style that can support more weight.

And finally, once you’ve got it narrowed down, choose a color or pattern that speaks to your own personal style. After all, it’s not just a baby carrier. It’s likely going to become your most used fashion accessory! Luckily most brands are designed with that in mind and offer an array of gorgeous palettes that go with practically everything.

How to use a baby wrap

If you’re intimidated by using a baby wrap, you’re not alone! Wrangling a tiny, potentially mid-meltdown baby into a piece of fabric one-handed is enough to make even the most seasoned mama have a meltdown of her own. But with a little practice and a few deep breaths, it’s totally doable.

Says Pryor, “Just like adapting any new skill, there’s a learning curve to babywearing so be patient with yourself. If you’re new to babywearing here’s a few tips that can help you get started. First, before placing your baby in the carrier make sure they’re fed, dry and not overstimulated. A calm baby will reduce any anxiety you may be feeling.” And don’t be afraid to seek help online or from experts themselves. “Watching tutorial videos on the manufacturers website or social media channels can be incredibly helpful for visual learners. Many babywearing companies such as LILLEbaby and MOBY also offer 1-on-1 virtual fit help. This complimentary service is available by contacting the brands customer service. Online support groups are also great for tips and advice from fellow parents and babywearing experts. If you’re still struggling to get a good fit, don’t give up. It may be a good idea to contact a local babywearing consultant.”

Not sure which baby wrap is right for you? We’ve selected some of our favorites to consider!

Solly Baby Wrap

Solly Baby

$69

Wrap

Solly Baby wraps have a dedicated fanbase–and for good reason! (One Motherly editor even calls it her “most favorite piece of baby gear ever.”)  Made from a super lightweight and sustainable  TENCEL™ Modal fabric, they’re thinner than other wraps on the market and twice as soft as cotton. The breathability makes them a top choice for warm climates, though with the heat babies put off, it’s a great option anywhere, anytime.

And since it’s comprised of just one long strip of fabric, there’s no tricky sizing to calculate and it can be used by every caregiver on your roster! (It also makes it incredibly compact and easy to stuff into a diaper bag.) Note that babies can only be carried in the front, inward-facing position from 8-25 pounds.

Prices start at $69

Moby Wrap Classic

Moby

$44.99

Classic Wrap Carrier

The award-winning classic Moby is also made from a simple strip of stretchy fabric, however in this case it’s a thicker cotton. On the plus side, that allows it to be used in two different carry positions (inward front-facing and hip carry) and up to 33 pounds. Versatile baby gear that lasts? Yes please.

On the other hand, it’s quite a bit warmer for both wearer and baby. If you’re due in the summer or live in a warm climate, it may not be your top choice. It’s also quite a bit longer than other wraps which makes it tricky to tie when you’re out of the house and don’t want to drag it all over the ground. That said, it makes it easy to swap between caregivers that widely range in size. I’m a petite 5’2″ and shared with my very not petite 6’2″ partner with no problem at all.

Lillebaby Dragonfly Wrap

Lillebaby

$59.99

Dragonfly Wrap

If you’re worried that tying a wrap is too complicated, consider the Líllé Baby Dragonfly. The easy-to-use design is made from two pieces of fabric–one piece with two panels of fabric that pass over the shoulders diagonally across the body like a shirt and a second separate piece of fabric that’s tied horizontally around both caregiver and baby. Since the main piece is pre-threaded through the back, it’s easy to adjust and tighten without assistance.

The all-natural Supima Cotton and Modal blend fabric is soft and stretchy, and like the other wraps it’s made in just one size that can easily be shared. It’s designed for inward front-facing only and can be used up to 30 pounds.

You rocked that bump, birthed a brand new human and now it’s time to get back to that wardrobe for one. Not so fast, mama. If you’re nursing, you know that fourth trimester (and even beyond!) is more like dressing for one and a half. You require near constant boob access, so after finding the right nursing bra, nursing shirts are an everyday essential.

With hidden features like side panels or liftable flaps, there are tons of styles that can go the distance and help you get more bang for the buck.

Are nursing tops necessary?

Of course not. If you’re breastfeeding, any shirt you’re wearing is a nursing shirt. Personally, I was always a big fan of the pull aside, pop the boob in the mouth method. But that doesn’t work for every occasion.

Yes, there’s a hands-free mirror for looking between your legs–and here’s why you need it https://www.mother.ly/postpartum/postpartum-products/nyssa-self-check-mirror/ Thu, 20 Jan 2022 19:56:06 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=70918 As a person who’s been known to post up in a well lit hotel bathroom plucking face hairs I never even knew existed, the value of a great mirror isn’t lost on me. I could spend hours inspecting every pore, blemish, and follicle, familiarizing myself with each mole and freckle. My vulva on the other hand? Barely know her.

Ok, that’s not exactly true. Up until recently I’d only ever inspected myself a few times. Once after my “special” health class in fifth grade to confirm there were three holes down there (WHAT? Why was I just learning this???), once to make sure I hadn’t ripped out my stitches post childbirth, again when I thought I’d lost a menstrual disc to my lonely uterus, and one time just for funsies. (It wasn’t fun enough to do it again.) Then I was introduced to the Nyssa VieVision Between Legs Self-Check Mirror.

What’s a self-check mirror?

As the name states, the VieVision was designed with the most intimate part of your body in mind–and it shows. Created by co-founders Mia Clarke, Eden Laurin, Ellen Kellogg and Aubrey Howard, the hands-free mirror features curved edges so you can comfortably hold it between your legs while standing or laying back. It comes equipped with a soft LED light that makes it feel more like a spa and less like an interrogation and looks pretty enough you can leave it out on your bathroom counter. The packaging is gorgeous and includes an OB-GYN-approved checklist and playful anatomical illustration to guide you if you need it.

“By creating VieVision, our hope is that more people with vulvas have a beautiful, effective tool to take care of their health and wellbeing in a practical sense. But also the information they need to realize the power of simply looking with regularity.”

Mia Clarke, Nyssa Co-Founder

The first time I settled in to use it I reflected on the fact that I’m almost 40 with two kids and could count on one hand how many times I’d seen what I was about to see. (And have fingers left over.) I’ve used menstrual cups for years but manage to fly blind, not because I’m a prude, but well, it’s just a lot of biology to inspect. I’m far from the only person who couldn’t identify herself in a line up.

“Unless we actively choose to look at ourselves, we can go our entire lives never once seeing this essential part of our anatomy (an OB-GYN in our network recently told us she had a 65-year-old patient who had never seen her own vulva). Because there is still so much shame and stigma around vulvas, and so little education, girls and women just don’t look,” says Clarke.

Suddenly, my ignorance struck me as sad. I mean, what’s more empowering than knowing your body? Every single inch of it?

Of course, knowledge is power and regular self checks can help you understand what’s normal for you. Having a baseline allows you to have better conversations with your doctor when changes crop up. Common issues like yeast infections make themselves known with discharge and discomfort, but they’re often accompanied by redness and swelling–two things that you might not even recognize if you haven’t looked before. And minor things, like ingrown hairs, can feel like a big deal until closer inspection. All made easier to check out with this brilliant (and dare I say elegant!) little tool. I only wish I’d had it when I was pregnant. I may have even tried to shave if I could’ve seen anything.

“Why not just use a compact?”

–Someone who’s never tried to look at their vag with a compact.

According to Clarke, “For those of us that have looked at our vulva, we’ve probably had the wobbly experience of hovering on one leg over a toilet with a cosmetic mirror. It’s hardly ideal. And while people can certainly use different mirrors to look at their vulva, I think a huge part of what makes VieVision special is the fact that it’s a tool for critical conversations about the importance of knowing our bodies.”

For me, becoming more comfortable with my body isn’t just about my own health and wellbeing but my daughter’s as well. She’s 10 and on the cusp of puberty. And while she’d rather pull out her eyelashes than talk to me about her impending period, I want her to know that when she’s ready, I’m here for it. Whatever she needs. Normalizing the vocabulary and being able to properly identify it is such an important part of becoming an adult who knows, trusts and appreciates their body. The more comfortable I am, the more comfortable she will be. She’s not quite there yet, but at least she already knows you don’t pee from the same place you put a tampon. And that’s more than I knew at her age, so we’re on the right track.

13 nursing tank tops you’ll wear every single day https://www.mother.ly/postpartum/postpartum-products/nursing-tank-tops/ Wed, 19 Jan 2022 15:06:18 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=69931 When you’re breastfeeding every outfit comes with the question, “Are my boobs accessible?” Not exactly a requirement you’ve looked for in previous seasons of life. (Probably.) But these days, it’s all boob all the time and let me tell you–nursing tank tops are where it’s at.

Personally, I can’t think of any article of clothing I’ve owned that worked harder than my nursing tank tops. I nursed two littles for approximately three decades each (OK, four years and two months total but who’s counting?) in frigid Vermont and wore one every single day. Keeping my belly covered while breastfeeding wasn’t just about modesty, it was about not freezing every time my little eating machines needed me.

But no matter where you live, a nursing cami is essential. They’re perfect for layering, great for sleeping and the right styles can even work solo. And, unlike nursing shirts which lock you into a single look, a tank offers much more versatility.

So, what should you look for in a nursing tank?

It obviously depends on your personal preferences but a few elements are key.

  • A built-in shelf bra to keep you supported without the extra layer of a nursing bra. (A tangle of bra and tank top straps can become cumbersome.)
  • Adjustable straps help customize the fit and keep the straps from slipping off your shoulders while you nurse.
  • If you opt for tighter styles, be sure there’s enough room in the chest when you’re at your fullest. A too tight tank can cause mastitis pretty quickly.
  • Nursing pad pockets are a must-have. Leaky boobs are guaranteed and breast pads make all the difference. Some styles come with removable pads while others require you to add your own.

No matter what your needs, there’s a nursing tank top you’re sure to love. Find it below!

The postpartum wellness class every mama deserves https://www.mother.ly/postpartum/postpartum-class-online/ Mon, 18 Oct 2021 03:13:52 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=44859 During pregnancy, a mama doesn’t have to look far for wellness advice. But what about after your baby is born? What about the wellness questions that might not come up in your postnatal check-ups? When it might feel like the whole world is checking on your baby’s health, what about your self-care? At Motherly, we’ve always put mothers first—so we created an online class that was all about prioritizing your health.

Postpartum class

The Motherly Postpartum Wellness Class was developed to help moms navigate the joyous, exhausting, awkward, confusing and sometimes downright scary first few weeks with a newborn. The nine-lesson program covers both physical and mental recovery from childbirth (no matter if yours was medicated or unmedicated, cesarean or vaginal), shares self-nurturing and nutrition tips, and guides you through the tricky waters of postpartum mental health. Plus, it also covers the basics of newborn care, including expert-backed sleep, soothing and feeding techniques.

Led by Certified Nurse-Midwife Diana Spalding, the course also calls on experts like psychologist Dr. Claire Nicogossian, dietitian Crystal Kargas and health scientist Kristen Mark to help you feel informed and empowered in all aspects of postpartum health.

Wondering how you’ll make it to a class with a newborn in tow? We’ve got you, mama. The Motherly Postpartum Wellness Class is 100% digital, meaning you can complete it at your own pace at a time and location that works best for you. As soon as you register, every lesson is available right away and you can prioritize the lessons you need most.

Because, like everything at Motherly, we designed this class with you in mind.

In addition to the video courses, each segment also provides meditations, essential reading from the Motherly archives and recommended episodes of Motherly’s Becoming Mama podcast to provide even more information and support as you navigate your new life as mama.

And because motherhood is best done with a village, those who sign up for the Motherly Postpartum Wellness Class also receive an invitation to join our supportive private online community to connect with other moms and chat directly with the course instructor.

If you’re looking for support before your little one is born, register for our class bundle that includes the Motherly Pregnancy Wellness Class, Motherly Birthing Class and our Motherly Postpartum Wellness Class. All Motherly classes may even be covered through select health insurances and flexible spending account benefits, so be sure to contact your insurance to see if you qualify.

Ingrid + Isabel’s affordable new skincare line gives mamas the pampering they need https://www.mother.ly/shop/ingrid-isabel-skincare-line/ Wed, 29 Sep 2021 01:54:00 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=30957 From the revolutionary Bellaband to effortlessly stylish maternity clothes, Ingrid + Isabel has long graced the closets of mamas-to-be. Twenty years into the game, they’re still finding new ways to support moms–this time with a mom-and-baby-safe skincare line that upholds the mission they’ve had since day one.

“Ingrid+Isabel is the original destination where moms can go to find what they need and trust it’s the best,” said Ingrid Carney, Founder and CEO. “Everything we design ourselves or source for mom must pass for quality and purpose – so when it came to skincare, we were searching for products that were naturally safe and effective. Instead, we found skincare claiming to be “natural” but loaded with harsh ingredients we’d never recommend for moms. We worked two years on our own premium skincare line to offer her targeted solutions for unique skin concerns, using only the best ingredients from nature.”

In partnership with natural ingredient experts, Ingrid + Isabel worked tirelessly to design the two most vital products pregnant and new mamas need: A belly oil to nourish her ever-growing bump and a balm to soothe and heal dry, cracked skin. Throughout pregnancy and the fourth trimester, every moment of self care you can squeeze in matters. The Oil and The Balm help keep those rituals simple without the requirement of combing through a mile-long list of ingredients–because ingredients matter more during pregnancy and postpartum than at any other time. Each of the products are made from just a handful of natural and effective powerhouses like organic extra virgin olive oil, lavender flower, beeswax, and more. They’re also Leaping Bunny Certified and free of harsh or irritating ingredients like parabens, gluten, or soy.

It’s such a treat when a brand we already know and trust offers up new ways to pamper moms. If you need a dose of nourishing self care or want to show a new mom some love, check out Ingrid + Isabel’s new skincare line below!
