After all, each month brings new and exciting milestones and changes you want to document and remember.

One of the most fun ways to capture their incredible growth? Baby milestone cards!

What is a baby milestone card?

Simply put, baby milestone cards are cards parents use to document the important moments in their baby’s life. From their monthly growth to the exciting “firsts” that occur throughout that first year, they’re often included as a prop to create a sweet photo for their baby memory book or even to share on social media. They can be wooden, printed on cardstock, or even cleverly designed as stickers depending on the look you’re going for.

How to use baby milestone cards

As your baby grows, snapping those photos becomes a bit trickier, doesn’t it? (There are so many great photos to take in baby’s first year!) The first few months it’s easy to prop the milestone cards alongside them on a baby blanket or in their crib. Once they’re sitting up and have control of their hands, you may just have to give in to whatever happens. (Spoiler alert: They’re definitely going to try to eat it.)

If you go the paper route, we suggest slipping it into an inexpensive frame that you can swap out every month and placing it just out of reach or on a designated spot on the wall. Some printable monthly milestone cards can be blown up to poster size which looks great in a nursery.

And because you’re responsible for a real live human while also having a busy life of your own, we’ll say this now. You’re going to forget a month. It’s ok. We don’t know a single parent who hasn’t snapped at least one monthly photo at least a week late. It’s kind of a parenting badge of honor.

Photography tips and tricks

First of all, you don’t need professional looking photos by any means. Looking back at our own baby books it’s clear this is a concern our parents did not have. (Which is to assume there are more than five photos of your babyhood still in existence.) But if you want to kick your photo shoots up a notch, here are a few tips that can help!

  • Natural light is best. Set your little one up next to a window or even in a shady area outside.
  • Keep the background as uncluttered as possible. Shooting from above as they lay on a blanket keeps things super simple. Or, opt for a spot that’s easy to keep free of distractions. Not only will the photo look more professional, it also keeps the look consistent month after month.
  • Make sure they’re fed, well rested and in a good mood before you even attempt to take a photo. Repeat until they’re 45 years old.

We’ve rounded up a collection of printable baby milestone cards (including some of our own Motherly versions!) along with reusable monthly milestone cards that fit every style.

20 best baby milestone blankets to track the first year of your child’s life https://www.mother.ly/baby/baby-milestones/best-baby-milestone-blankets/ Thu, 19 Jan 2023 22:09:56 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=167325 One of the first things a new parent learns, amidst the sleep deprivation and endless diaper changes, is that their tiny baby grows FAST. It seems like each new month (or even week!) brings another development—they laugh for the first time, their hair is growing in, they can keep their head up longer, a tooth is popping through. And as parents frantically add each of these big moments to their baby memory books, making sure it’s all documented, they often realize that they need more pictures to look back and remember all of the many changes that happened from month to month. That’s where baby milestone blankets come in and why they are such a smart (and fun!) purchase for a family expecting a new baby.

What are baby milestone blankets?

A milestone blanket is one of those things parents always say “I’m so glad I had one of those!” There’s nothing better than flipping through an album of your baby from the first day to the 365th day of their life, all on the same blanket. Plus, a milestone blanket offers you the chance to “mark” their age—whether it’s three months or six, so when you look back on old pictures, you don’t have to wonder how old your baby was.

What is the best size for a baby milestone blanket?

Baby milestone blankets come in a variety of sizes, mostly starting at 30″ x 40″ and going all the way up to 60″ x 80.” Consider the size of your space when purchasing—where you do you think you’ll lay out the blanket for a pic? How far out do you want to zoom so you can include the entire design? Also, consider that baby will be growing, so a small one might be perfect for your tiny newborn, but once they’re a squirmy 10-month-old, you might wish you’d have purchased a bigger one.

How to take pictures on a milestone blanket

It’s simple, really, and super fun! Usually around the first of the month (or honestly, whenever you think of it because we know you’re still in that desperate “When does parenting get less exhausting? phase) you lay out your blanket and check for good lighting (you are taking a picture after all). Then you set up the rest—how will you “mark” the month? Did your blanket come with a ring to encircle the number or numbered cards to place? If not, you can choose whatever marker or cut-out you want, like an empty picture frame, your favorite bracelet, or even just make a circle with a piece of string or ribbon. Or, make your own numbered cards out of card stock or felt!

Finally, once the blanket is set up, place your baby down on it, and get ready to snap those pics and share away with everyone you love.

10 best breastmilk cooler bags that will keep your breastmilk fresh and cold for hours https://www.mother.ly/baby/baby-products/best-breastmilk-cooler-bags/ Wed, 14 Dec 2022 15:09:58 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=153579 Whether it’s because you’re back at work post-maternity leave, or you’re on a quick weekend getaway without the baby (which you 1000% deserve) or you’re just simply running errands for a couple hours, there are a million and one reasons why moms often pump when they’re out of the house and need a cooler bag to store that coveted breastmilk in so they can save it for a future feeding. (Personally, as a breastfeeding mom, nothing broke my heart more than pumping and dumping because I didn’t have a safe way to keep my milk cold.)

That’s why one must-have on the list of breastfeeding products is a cooler bag for that liquid gold. But, as is often the case for busy moms on the go, there are endless choices! How long can breastmilk even be in a cooler? What should you look for in a breastmilk cooler bag? Let’s unpack and get some answers.

Related: First trip without your baby? 6 tips to make for smooth travels

How long can breastmilk be stored in a cooler bag?

According to the CDC, “Breastmilk can be stored in an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours when you are traveling.” And, the CDC adds, as soon as you’ve arrived to your destination, the breastmilk should be used, refrigerated, or frozen immediately.

So knowing that you can pump and safely keep your milk for future use, investing in a good breastmilk cooler bag is key if you want to continue to breastfeed when you’re away from your baby.

What should you look for in a breastmilk cooler bag?

Functionality, for one. For example, some bags hold six bottles or more. Others only hold one or two, or don’t even hold bottles at all and are only good for storing bags of breastmilk. Depending on your needs and budget, you might want to splurge on a high-end luxury cooler bag, or opt for a low-cost option that works for when you’re out of the house for just an hour or two.

Also, some breast milk cooler bags only fit certain brands of bottles, while others provide more room, fit all types of brands, and can even double as lunch totes or wine bottle coolers as well. With that said, here’s a list of breastmilk cooler bags we love that range from fancy to simple, large to small, and even skip the “bag” component altogether!

How to change a diaper: A step-by-step guide https://www.mother.ly/baby/how-to-change-a-diaper/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 21:46:47 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=149703 When you become a parent, you will experience a severe learning curve and need to learn many things along the way. Whether you have a newborn or one on the way, learning what you can now will help save you time later. One of these things is how to change a diaper.

Before having kids, I had never changed a diaper because I was the youngest in my family and never really babysat. I had to learn how to change a baby’s diaper after we got home while recovering after a tough delivery with my first because my husband did all the diaper changes while we were in the hospital. So trust me when I say that being prepared will help as you embark on this journey of dirty diapers—whether you use disposal or go the cloth diapering route.

So if you have a toddler in your home and just need a refresher, or you’re a new mama wondering how to change a newborn diaper, we have you covered with baby diaper instructions below.

The 4th trimester: A doula's guide to everything you need to know

How to change a newborn diaper: What you’ll need

1. Diapers of two sizes

While you should have a few newborn-sized diapers, you should also make sure that you have size 1. Your newborn baby will grow fast, so having a size up and ready to go will be invaluable. This change can happen quicker than you realize, and you don’t want to run out of diapers. So whatever style or brand you decide on—natural diapers, a diaper subscription service, or good old Pampers—you’re going to need more than you think you do.

Healthybaby Monthly Diaper Bundle

Healthybaby

$105

Monthly Diaper Bundle

When it comes to safety, sustainability and performance, Healthybaby diapers check all the boxes and then some. As the first (and only) diapers verified by the EWG, they’re setting a new standard in the diaper industry. Their premium, plant-based disposable diapers took three years to develop and are tested for over 900 chemical compounds, assuring parents that they’re the purest on the market. Ordering Healthybaby’s Monthly Diaper Bundle ensures you have a consistent supply of high-quality diapers for your little one and will never run out.

coterie diapers

Coterie

$90

The Diaper – 1 Month Supply

Coterie has upgraded basically every aspect of diapering. Not only have these ultra clean and simple diapers been developed with the highest safety standards, boasting a lengthy list of certifications, but they work to fund renewable energy initiatives, partner with the non-profit Baby2Baby to donate your unused, returned diapers to those in need and are even working to develop a better diaper recycling solution.

Pampers Pure Diapers

Pampers Pure

$65.47

Hypoallergenic Disposable Baby Diapers – 198 count

A tried and true and most importantly trusted brand by parents for decades, the Pampers line of all natural, plant-based diapers (called Pampers Pure) are extremely breathable and absorbent, keeping your baby’s bum dry and free of diaper rash. Plus, they’re chlorine, fragrance, paraben and latex free! Conveniently, they’re widely available in your local super markets and drug stores or on Amazon!

2. Wipes

Wipes are another item you want to be sure not to run out of, and, like all these items, they need to be within reach. There are many options, and not all of them will work for your baby. It is a good idea to start with those for sensitive skin, and then go from there. (Check out our picks for the best eco-friendly and natural baby wipes).

honest baby wipes

Honest

$4.95

Baby Wipes

Boasting “cheek to cheek” versatility 🤣, we love The Honest Co.’s wipes for what they don’t have rather than for what they do: no alcohol, chlorine processing, phthalates, parabens, or any other potentially harmful chemical. Honest Wipes are one of our favorites for functionality, too—they’re large, durable, and moist enough to clean even the biggest messes. (They also come in adorable packages that feature their signature prints!) Prices vary.

seventh generation baby wipes

Seventh Generation

$27.99

Baby Wipes – 768 count

Great for sensitive skin, these thick, soft wipes offer safe and gentle cleaning for baby’s bottom, hands, and face. They’ve been dermatologist tested and are hypoallergenic, fragrance free, and don’t contain any alcohol or parabens. Prices vary.

3. Changing pad

You need something soft to change your baby on. This could be a changing pad, blanket, or even a towel. As long as you put it on something safe like a changing table or the floor, you can use whatever soft item you like. Just keep in mind that it may get dirty.

Skip Hop changing pad

Skip Hop

$79.99

Nursing Style Changing Pad – Grey

The Skip Hop wipe-clean changing pad tops many lists of “must-haves” for baby—and with good reason. Made with contoured, cushioned foam and a non-skid base that will keep it in place, this changing pad is wipeable and won’t absorb liquids or smells. (Yay!) The Skip Hop pad also has a tuck-away toy bar and safety belt so baby can be distracted and safely secured while you change their diaper. It’s like they thought of everything when designing this thing.

Jool changing pad

Jool

$34.99

Contoured Changing Pad with Cover

This changing pad from Jool is another highly rated baby item—due to its non-skid grip design and the fact that it’s made with standard dimensions to fit pretty much any changing table. The pad comes with a soft, machine-washable, odor-resistant cover too (which is important, because the chances of it needing to be washed are… well… 1000%).

Lil Fox portable diaper changing pad

Lil Fox

$22.99

Portable Diaper Changing Pad

Stationary changing pads are important, of course, but as we all know, a loooooot of baby’s diaper changes will happen when you’re out of the house, making a portable changing table necessary. (It’s also great to just have this at home in a separate room from the stationary changing pad/table so you have more than one place to change a diaper!) The Lil Fox portable changing pad is a favorite due to its easily opened (single-handed) hook and loop fastener mechanism as well as multiple pockets for diapers, wipes, creams, and whatever else you might need to get the job done. Add in the soft memory-foam headrest and water-proof, wipe-clean fabric, and… well, you see why everyone loves it.

4. Diaper pail or garbage can

You need somewhere to dispose of the diaper. You could use a fancy diaper pail or a garbage can. It is really up to you. If you decide on cloth diapers, you will need a wet bag to put them in until you wash them.

diaper genie

Diaper Genie

$48.12

Diaper Genie Signature Pail + 1 refill

It won’t grant you 3 wishes, but the Diaper Genie is probably the most magical of all the diaper pails—at least when it comes to smell. With odor-locking clamps, a foot pedal for hands-free operation and convenience, and easy tear-away bags, the Diaper Genie has it all. You do need to use this brand’s unique bags, however, so make sure to add a couple extra refills to your cart now (you’re gonna need them!)

Ubbi steel diaper pail

Ubbi

$69.99

Steel Odor-Locking Diaper Pail

The Ubbi diaper pail costs more than others upfront, but you don’t have to buy special bags if you don’t want to. That’s right—this one works with regular bags just fine (and still blocks odor!) A winner of nine awards proving that parents everywhere love it, the Ubbi pail is different in that it’s made from steel, which is not porous like plastic, so the pail truly traps in odor. And it comes in 15 different colors, so you can find one that fits your nursery decor.

5. Diaper cream

When they’re tiny, you’ll change your baby often, so be sure to have diaper cream on hand. They will probably get a rash, and you will want to be able to soothe it quickly.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste

Boudreaux's BP

$7.49

Butt Paste Diaper Rash Ointment

Ask veteran parents about what they recommend for diaper rash, and there’s a good chance they’ll tell you to “get the butt paste!” because it works. Boudreaux’s truly heals a sore baby bottom—often on the first application. Free of parabens, dyes, and talc, this one’s a a tried-and-true that’s been around for years, and parents of babies know why.

Earth Mama Organic Diaper Balm

Earth Mama

$8.99

Organic Diaper Balm

Earth Mama likes their customers to know exactly what in is in their products—like this diaper balm, made with lavender and tea tree essential oils, St. John’s Wort, chickweed, plantain, and calendula to protect and comfort painful or itchy skin. Gentle and effective, Earth Mama’s Organic Diaper Balm is a safe and smart choice to sooth and comfort your little one. (And pssst! Breastfeeding moms—their nipple butter is ah-mazing too.)

6. A safe place to change your baby

You could use a changing table, a dresser with a contoured changing pad, a bed or the floor. For those early days, it will be helpful to have a place up higher to change your baby. Once they get bigger and start moving around more, you can pretty much change them anywhere that’s safe.

west elm mid-century modern changing table dresser

Pottery Barn Kids

$1499

west elm x pbk Mid-Century 6-Drawer Changing Table

Obviously this one’s a huge investment—but you’re getting two pieces in one. A changing table plus a dresser that will last your kid’s entire childhood (and then some!) This gorg mid-century modern piece would look absolutely stunning in any nursery as well as child’s bedroom long after the changing pad is removed.

Delta Children

Adley Changing Table

This super cute changing table comes in white or gray and includes two open shelves where you can store diapers, wipes, extra clothes, and anything else baby might need. The Adley Changing Table comes with a changing pad and safety strap as well as wheels at the bottom so it’s easily moveable around your home.

7. Hand sanitizer

Sanitizer may be a good thing to keep in your changing area since you will need to move your baby before you can wash your hands.

Hello Bello hand sanitizer gel

Hello Bello

$4.50

Hand Sanitizer Gel

Hello Bello is a safe and effective sanitizer to have nearby for anyone who is about to touch the baby—whether that’s you, your partner, your guests, or your other children. Made without synthetic fragrances or artificial dyes, Hello Bello kills germs and keeps skin soft.

The Honest Co. also makes a great sanitizer—this one is in spray form—that will kill germs but be safe around baby. A plant-based sanitizer that effectively kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria, this spray sanitizer is hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested. And it leaves hands clean and soft without a sticky residue. The perfect choice to have by the changing table!

The process: How to change a diaper

Step 1: Taking off the old diaper

Before you get started, make sure you have all items within reach. Lay your baby down and unfasten the onesie. Slide it up to try to keep it out of the way of any accidents. Put the clean diaper under the dirty one to have it ready. This practice will save you time and help keep the changing area clean.

Step 2: Cleaning

Unfasten the dirty diaper, fold it and push it closed under your baby’s butt. This practice will get some of the dirty stuff out of the way. Then, clean between all the folds with a wipe.

Step 3: Apply diaper rash cream as needed

If (when) your baby develops a diaper rash, be sure to apply cream each time until it heals. The cream isn’t necessary if there’s no rash present, but it is helpful when there is one.

Step 4: Close it up and stick it

Fully close the diaper, wrap it and stick the tabs to it. This will help everything stay inside when you throw it away. Fasten the tabs on the clean diaper and close up the onesie.

Step 5: Sanitize or wash

If you have hand sanitizer, use it now. If you want to wash your hands, place your baby in a nearby crib or bassinet.

Step 6: Hugs!

Don’t forget the after-changing cuddles!

Tips and tricks to changing a diaper

How to change a newborn diaper

When you have a newborn, they will go through diapers often. It’s usually about 10 diapers daily, so be sure you’re changing them often enough. The color of poop will also change from green to more yellow-green. Some red is also common in the first few days but still contact your doctor.

When changing a newborn, you must also be careful of the umbilical cord stump. Be sure to fold the diaper down a bit, so it’s not on top of this stump. If you’re using newborn diapers, these are usually cut to accommodate the stump, but your baby may need to go up in size before the stump falls off.

Diaper changing tips for girls

For girls, make sure you’re wiping front to back to avoid infections. You should also clean between the folds of the skin gently.

Diaper changing tips for boys

Many moms have a problem getting peed on by boys, so cover the penis with another diaper or cloth to keep pee from flying in the air. When you close the diaper, the penis should be pointing down, which can also help prevent leaks.

Diaper changing tips for toddlers

Once you’re out of the newborn stage, you will need to deal with a wiggly toddler. You can entertain them with a song, talk or give them a toy while changing their diapers. You can also have them help by collecting supplies for you. If you are changing a diaper with just pee, some parents rely on changing the diaper while their toddler is standing up.

There’s so much stuff to learn as a new parent, but you can prepare well for diaper changes ahead of time. Knowing how to put a diaper on a baby is a key parenting skill. The steps above will help you understand how before you bring your baby home.

The Munchkin Sparrow Stroller finally converted me to umbrella strollers https://www.mother.ly/baby/baby-products/munchkin-sparrow-stroller-review/ Thu, 03 Nov 2022 14:24:53 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=142583 Other moms advised me on the efficiency of keeping a stroller in the back of your car, but no one warned me that strollers aren’t the most “user-friendly” mom tool. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve nearly broken my expensive, travel-system stroller trying to unfold it. And I can only imagine the number of people that have watched me struggle in parking lots, trying to remember which way the stroller unfolds and did I lift the little latch thing up?

Enter: The Munchkin Sparrow Stroller

Munchkin sent me their new Sparrow Stroller, which is their ultra-compact stroller and, as the box says, it’s “ready to fly.”

Does the stroller unfold easily?

The stroller comes in a box completely folded up into a perfect square. There’s even a picture on the box of how it’s folded in its actual size. It comes in a stroller bag (perfect for extra storage on your walks!) and, before I knew it, the umbrella stroller unfolded with one hand, without me having to read directions.

Does the stroller fold easily?

I will admit, this is where I did have to read some directions. Short answer: yes! It does require two sets of hands to fold back up. It folds back up into the perfect little square it was in, in the box. Because it folds into such a compact bundle, it does not take up much space at all in your car! I am used to removing my stroller when I have to run errands (not ideal when I have to take the bébé on said errands) just to create room in my trunk. This stroller will be my new go-to for errands and family adventures! It will be the stroller that stays in the car.

Munchkin Sparrow Stroller features

The first thing I noticed about the Munchkin Sparrow stroller: the handles. Instead of a handlebar handle, the Munchkin Sparrow stroller has two vertical bars for you to rest your hands on. And, even better, the bars are adjustable! My husband and I are very different heights. It’s great that I can keep the stroller on the lower setting and he can raise the bars up when he’s driving the stroller.

Also, it’s so light! Whether folded or unfolded, the stroller is so light and easy to manage. It’s never cumbersome, even when with a wiggly babe inside. It’s also rare for a stroller with a 5-point (fully adjustable) harness system to feel this light.

Related: The stroller designed with both kids in mind

Speaking of light, the Munchkin Sparrow stroller has a little foldable shade flap. When you switch to an umbrella stroller, you typically are forced to forgo any kind of sun or rain protection. But this flap is available if the sun or rain is falling directly on baby’s head. And when you’re not using it, it acts as a comfy headrest for the baby.

But my favorite feature: There’s storage under the seat! Very rarely do umbrella strollers feature storage space at all. It’s one reason I’ve had a difficult time fully switching from my travel system stroller! It’s so nice to be able to store any necessities for adventures, so I don’t have to also carry around a big diaper bag.

With this new umbrella stroller, I’ve folded up my travel system stroller. I’m wondering if I’ll ever unfold it (which brings me a tinge of sadness–another baby item I no longer need!) or if the Sparrow will be my new, easy go-to. So far, I’ve not needed the travel system stroller.

Ashley Graham’s Pottery Barn Kids nursery aesthetic is ‘functional’ and ‘calm’—and yours can be, too https://www.mother.ly/baby/baby-products/ashley-grahams-nursery/ Thu, 13 Oct 2022 17:28:32 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=135333 If there’s one room in any parent’s home that absolutely needs to be as soothing as it is functional, it’s the nursery. And being a mom of three little boys under three after welcoming twins earlier this year means Ashley Graham knew her nursery had to give off a calming vibe—which is why she partnered with Pottery Barn Kids to achieve just that.

“My personal style is very calm, chill, lots of neutrals,” Graham tells E! News. “I have three little kids so everything has to be functional.”

Yes to all of this. Particularly because she and her family just moved to a new home—something many families with young kiddos can relate to—and had to transition her oldest son, Isaac, into an upgraded “big boy” room so his little baby brothers, Roman and Malachi, could have the perfect nursery they need.

And because moms of multiples basically have to have superpowers when it comes to creating functional spaces and organizing All The Things, Graham managed to fit two cribs, a changing station, rocking chair, bookshelf, two ride-on rockers and other baby necessities in just ONE ROOM.

“As a mom of three under 3, the word home to me means snuggles and activities and loud fun in the house and I love it so much,” Graham said. “Isaac got his transitional big boy room. He is just so drawn to everything. He will play in his room for hours.”

13 newborn photo outfits for your baby’s first portraits https://www.mother.ly/baby/baby-products/newborn-photo-outfits/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 13:50:40 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=133146 I don’t know about you, but could there possibly be anything sweeter than seeing those heart-melting photos of a baby’s first days in the world? I think not. Newborn photos are probably one of the most sentimental memories that a family can have within the baby’s first year. From capturing those cozy sleeping moments in their precious newborn photo outfits to the accidental on-camera pees (welcome to parenthood😅), those baby photos will leave you gushing over the life that you’ve welcomed into this world.

There’s no wonder that people put a lot of planning into newborn baby photos. From finding the perfect newborn photo outfits to choosing the best photographer for you, whether you’re taking newborn photos at home or in a studio, every tiny decision counts.

According to Motherly’s Brand Consultant and mama of four, Anne Hill, there are many things that you should think about when preparing for your newborn’s photoshoot—like when you should schedule the photos to be taken, how to discuss your vision with the photographer and how to choose the best newborn photo outfits for your sweet bundle of joy.

Related: 22 of the sweetest newborn pictures

What makes a good newborn photo outfit?

Well, when it comes to choosing the best newborn photo outfits, there are many things you’re going to want to keep in mind. Are diaper changes easily accessible with the outfit you choose? Should you bring any backups? What styles or tones will look the best?

Hill shared that a well-fitting outfit that is a solid, neutral color often works best for newborn photos. Consider giving gender-neutrual baby clothes a try to get some great options.

“It helps the focus stay on the baby and not the clothes they are wearing. Neutral colors like white, cream or grey photograph well with newborn baby skin no matter their skin tone.”

Furthermore, you’ll want to make sure that the outfit is comfy and simple for your baby. The less you have to move them around or adjust their clothing, the less likely it’ll be that you’ll overstimulate them (cues a cranky baby).

How much should you expect to pay for newborn photos?

Prices for newborn photoshoots will vary upon location. According to Hill, parents can expect to spend anywhere between $300 to $800.

“The best way to plan for cost is to search for your photographer ahead of time, preferably in the second or third trimester. Search for newborn photographers in your area, then narrow down your options based on the photo style you like, cost and availability.”

Other tips to prepare for newborn photos

While we probably won’t hit every tip, these few pieces of advice given by Hill can get you started in the right direction of having a seamless newborn photoshoot experience.

1. Aim to have your newborn photoshoot between 5-10 days after their birth

“This gives you a little time to recover a bit from your labor, but still scheduled early enough that you capture your fresh and squishy newborn. The younger the baby, the easier it is for them to snooze through their photo session.”

2. Feed your baby right before the photo session

“This will help them be relaxed and happy, and in turn, help you feel relaxed and happy.”

As a photographer who has had her share of newborn photoshoots myself, I cannot emphasize this tip enough. Having your baby fed and burped means they’ll cry less and sleep better. And yes, it’s OK if your baby is asleep during photos. This makes it easier for the photographer to be able to adjust their poses and capture those peaceful moments.

Related: 10 photos to take on baby’s first day that you’ll cherish forever

3. Plan outfits ahead of time

“For your baby, yourself and your family. If you have this taken care of before the baby is born, it’s one less thing on your plate the day of.”

If your entire family will be in the photos together, still take heed to the advice of keeping neutral colors. If only baby will be in the pictures, ensure you have backup newborn photo outfits—just in case. Better safe than sorry!

4. Talk through your vision with the photographer

“If you have specific shots you want to take, make sure you tell/show your photographer ahead of time so they can add them to their shot list. You want to get everything you were looking for out of the shoot.”

So if your baby’s newborn photoshoot is approaching and you’ve got no idea what they should wear, don’t stress it mama. We’ve got you. We rounded up some of our favorite simplistic newborn photo outfits to share with you (and for you to share with others!).

A parent’s guide to car seat safety: Tips, rules & product picks https://www.mother.ly/parenting/safety/car-seat-safety/car-seat-safety-guide/ Thu, 18 Aug 2022 14:24:29 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=122731 Along with cribs and strollers, car seats top the list of new baby must-haves. Choosing a car seat for your child can feel daunting, namely because it’s tricky to keep up with the latest car seat guidelines, determine which model will actually fit in your car—and figure out how to use a car seat safely. Should you get a heavy-duty, convertible car seat that can last from infancy through the early school years, or should you invest in a more portable infant car seat and stroller system now, swapping it for a forward-facing toddler seat down the line? Both options have their pros and cons.

Which is why we asked experts to break down what you need to know about car seat safety, how to choose the best car seat for your needs and smart car seat installation hacks.

How to choose a safe car seat: Factors to consider

“I remember when I was pregnant with my first child and I went to one of the large baby stores to look for car seats, I was completely overwhelmed by all of the choices! Luckily it doesn’t take a rocket scientist, or even an engineer like me, to choose a car seat,” says Jennifer Pelky, Senior Engineering Manager – Advanced Interior Safety of Toyota Motor North America.

But there are things to keep in mind before you buy. Here’s what experts say to know about choosing a car seat:

  • You really can’t go wrong. “All car seats for sale in the U.S., regardless of price point, must meet the same safety standard (FMVSS 213),” Pelky says. “The starting point should be making sure the car seat fits your child [age, height and weight], fits your vehicle, and you can install it correctly every time.” But rest assured that any car seat you purchase from a U.S. store rather than a third-party retailer on Amazon will have been deemed safe according to U.S. standards.
  • Your child should stay rear-facing for longer than you think. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), many parents transition children out of rear-facing too soon—kids should ride rear-facing as long as possible. “This means they should stay rear-facing until they reach the height or weight limit for rear-facing in their car seat. This will vary by car seat model and child but is generally between the ages of 2 and 4,” says Pelky. You may want to look for a bigger model that can keep them rear-facing for longer.
  • Purchase your seat from a reliable retail store, notes Mia Rosenberg, CPST, a certified baby gear expert at PishPosh Baby. Some stores will let you try installing the car seat in your vehicle before purchasing to make sure it fits. If you’re buying online, check the car seat space requirements to ensure it’ll work with your car.
  • Consider purchasing more than one car seat base. Infant car seats click into and out of a pre-installed base, but it can take longer to move and reinstall the base between vehicles. If you have more than one car or a different caregiver will be transporting your child, a second car seat base can make those transitions smoother.

Types of car seats

In general, there are three types of car seats:

  • Infant car seats, which are strictly rear-facing.
  • Convertible car seats, which can flip from rear- to forward-facing, and can be used through toddlerhood and beyond.
  • Booster seats, which act as seat belt positioners for when your kiddo has outgrown their car seat but isn’t yet tall enough to properly wear a seat belt.

What is an infant car seat?

An infant car seat is a car seat specially designed for infants and babies under 1 year. Infant car seats are always rear-facing to meet safety requirements for most states, which mandate that children must be rear-facing until they are at least 2 years old and 20 pounds, although children can ride rear-facing for longer, too.

Rosenberg says she always recommends that children stay rear-facing until they reach the height or weight limit of the car seat, which can vary.

Infant car seats attach to a car seat base that stays installed in the vehicle, which means you can simply click the car seat holding your baby into and out of the base for easy transport—without having to unbuckle your baby every time.

Some infant car seats are compatible with certain strollers as part of a “travel system” that can seamlessly transition from car to stroller and back.

What is a convertible car seat?

A convertible car seat is also known as an all-in-one car seat, which can safely transport your child from birth through kindergarten or even longer. Convertible car seats start out as rear-facing seats when your child is an infant and can flip to forward-facing when they get taller and heavier.

This type of car seat attaches to your car using either a seat belt restraint system or the LATCH system built into the car (LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children and comes standard in nearly all vehicles and car seats made after 2002). Because they don’t click into a base, convertible car seats aren’t as easily portable as infant car seats, and can’t connect to a compatible stroller. If you need to regularly move your baby’s car seat between cars, they may not be the best option (they’re usually big and bulky), but they are a good bet if you just want one car seat that will grow with your child.

However, if you’re opting for a convertible car seat for your newborn or infant, be sure that they meet that specific car seat’s minimum requirements for height and weight, which should be listed on the manufacturer’s website. Some convertible seats are intended only for toddler use.

What is a booster seat?

A booster seat is a car seat designed to provide proper seat belt positioning for older children. It lifts the child higher up in the car seat and guides the seat belt shoulder strap so that it crosses their chest at the appropriate level. Some convertible car seats can transition into a booster seat, or booster seats are sold individually, as well.

Car seat safety by age

As your child ages, car seat safety requirements change, too, which is why it’s important to use the right type of car seat the right way every time your child rides in the car. Here’s a breakdown of car seat safety requirements for each age range, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Infants to 1 year old

From birth to 12 months, all children should be in a rear-facing car seat. Both infant car seats and convertible car seats can meet this need, just know that most kids outgrow their infant car seat by the time they turn 1, whereas a convertible car seat can last longer.

1 to 3 years old

Just because your child hits their first birthday doesn’t mean they should start facing forward in the car. The AAP states that rear-facing car seats are the best way to keep children safe, even beyond age 3, and that swapping for a forward-facing car seat comes with some increase in risk. “It is important to note that every transition is associated with some decrease in protection; therefore, parents should be encouraged to delay these transitions for as long as possible,” states the organization.

Your kiddo should stay rear-facing up until they reach the maximum height and/or weight limit listed on the car seat shell. (Know that it’s OK if their growing legs are somewhat bent once they’re strapped in!)

4 to 7 years old

Once they’ve reached the weight/height limit for their rear-facing car seat, it’s OK to switch to a forward-facing car seat. Then, they should stay in a forward position in a carseat with a harness and tether strap until they reach the weight/height limit as denoted by the car seat manufacturer.

Then, you can convert their car seat by removing the harness straps to a booster seat with a standard seat belt, while ensuring they still ride in the back seat.

8 to 12 years old

For kids younger than 13 who have outgrown their forward-facing seats, it’s still recommended that they continue to ride in the back seat only, while wearing a standard lap and shoulder seat belt. “All children under the age of 13 are safest in the back seat,” says Pelky.

“In some cases, the center seat location may offer some additional benefit, however, the most important factor is achieving a correct installation of the car seat. This can sometimes be more challenging in the center seat since they are often more narrow and may not have LATCH anchors available,” she notes.

For some kids in this age range, a booster seat may still be helpful for proper seat belt positioning, to ensure that the seat belt crosses their body at the appropriate points. Some boosters come equipped with LATCH attachments, too.

Car seat safety hacks

The key to a safe car seat is using it the right way every time. “According to the CDC, nearly half of all car seats and booster seats are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness,” notes Pelky. “Installation steps vary from model to model, so always follow the car seat user manual as well as your vehicle owner’s manual to make sure you are installing the car seat correctly.”

Don’t be tempted to ‘wing it,’ she says. Here are more safety tips to follow.

Make it snug

One common mistake Pelky sees parents make is not installing the car seat tight enough to the vehicle.

That can be remedied by using the “inch test,” she says.

How to do the inch test:

  • Grasp the car seat near the belt path (the area when the seat belt or lower anchor strap runs through the car seat) and give it a firm tug.
  • The car seat should not move more than 1 inch from side to side or front to back.
  • If it does, repeat the steps to tighten the car seat until movement is less than 1 inch.

Use the tether

“Another common mistake for forward-facing car seats is forgetting to attach the top tether strap,” reminds Pelky. “The top tether strap is an additional car seat-to-vehicle attachment that helps reduce the forward movement of the car seat and chance for head injury in a crash.” According to Safe Kids Worldwide, she notes, in 2015-2016, 64% of caregivers were not using the tether to secure their car seat. You should always attach the provided top tether on a forward-facing car seat unless otherwise instructed by the car seat or vehicle manufacturer.

Use an app

Nowadays, most new cars come equipped with safety alerts built in that remind you to check the backseat once you turn off the car, just in case there’s a sleeping kiddo back there. That’s intended to prevent tired parents from forgetting their baby or toddler is strapped into the carseat, which can be dangerous, especially in hot weather. But in case you’d like extra alerts or don’t have that feature, there are several apps designed to remind parents there’s a baby in the backseat, or even physical seatbelt sensors that can provide helpful reminders, too.

Check the chest clip

When strapping your little one in, be sure to check the chest clip. “Make sure it’s at [your child’s] armpit level, that it closes all the way and that you cannot pinch the strap,” says Rosenberg. The harness straps that run through the chest clip should be at or just above your child’s shoulders, adds Pelky.

How to do the pinch test:

  • Try to pinch a wrinkle in the harness strap at the top of the child’s shoulder.
  • If you can pinch a wrinkle, the harness is too loose.
  • Remove slack until the harness is snug enough that you can no longer pinch the wrinkle, but the child is still able to maintain their natural posture.

Untwist the straps

Also be sure to look for twists in the harness straps—an easy trick to untwist those pesky straps is to first add more slack, then fold the strap into the right angle before slipping the chest clip buckle over the fold. This TikTok has the full how-to.

FAQs about car seat safety

Q. When can a baby face forward in a car seat?

According to the AAP, there’s no age limit on when kids should start to face forward in a car seat. It’s actually about size, not about age (although the guidelines used to say kids should be rear facing until age 2, they’ve since been updated). A baby or child can face forward in a car seat once they have surpassed the weight and height limits of their car seat, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Q. How to install a car seat correctly?

The key to correct car seat installation is to follow the instructions in the car seat manual. But generally speaking, a car seat can either be installed using the LATCH system or by threading a lap belt of a seat belt through the base. The most important thing to remember is that it should be as tightly installed as possible, meaning there’s less than an inch of wiggle room either side to side or front to back.

“If you’re struggling or just can’t find the answers to your questions, help is available,” says Pelky. “There are over 35,000 nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians [like me] offering free car seat help.” Find resources in your area, including virtual appointments, here.

Q. How to buckle your child into a car seat correctly

For a child who still fits the height/weight guidelines for using a car seat with a harness strap, the harness straps should be snugly fit against their body. Make sure to buckle both the chest clip and the bottom lap belts, which cross over their hips. The top of the chest clip should be in line with their armpits, and you shouldn’t be able to pinch the straps above the chest clip.

Q. How long are car seats good for? When do car seats expire?

“Every brand is different,” says Rosenberg, so be sure to check your car seat’s manual. But on average, car seats expire six years from their date of manufacture. “However, many car seat manufacturers have now extended expiration dates to 10 years,” she notes. While it’s not illegal to use an expired car seat, it’s not recommended, given that the materials used could degrade over time. If your car seat is expired, you can sometimes trade it in for a discount on a new seat.

Q. What is the safest seat in the car for a baby?

The center seat tends to be the safest seat in the car for a baby, though that can come with other challenges, such as being harder to reach when getting baby into and out of the car, or not having enough room to fit the car seat, as center seats tend to be narrower. You’ll also need to make sure that your car’s center seat has a LATCH system in the middle; not all car models do.

Q. Can my child wear layers and their jackets in the car seat?

“As a parent of children in Midwest winters, I know the struggle is real! Unfortunately, puffy coats and car seats don’t mix,” states Pelky. “The puffiness that keeps us warm is actually mostly air. In a crash, the puffy material compresses and creates a loose harness, which could increase the chance for injury. Layers and light jackets are best,” she says. You’ll know if a light jacket or layer of clothing is thin enough if you can buckle your child’s harness without needing to adjust it with and without the jacket. “For older kiddos, try having them take off their coat to buckle, then put it back on backwards over the harness.”

Q. What happens if my baby falls asleep in the car seat?

“I doubt there are many parents out there who haven’t at one time or another taken their child for a ride in their car seat for the sole purpose of trying to coax them into falling asleep. However, car seats are designed for travel, not for prolonged sleep, and should be used only under supervision of a parent or caregiver,” Pelky shares. “There is low risk for children who are properly buckled who fall asleep in their car seat in the vehicle or a matching travel stroller designed for the car seat, because these devices keep the child positioned at the proper recline angle.”

However, she says, if the harness straps are loosened or the car seat is placed on another surface (like the floor at home) the child’s position and angle may change and cause respiratory issues.

Although it may be tempting to avoid anything that might wake the baby, upon reaching their destination, be sure to move your sleeping child from the car seat to a safe sleep space where they’ll be on their back, on a flat surface designed for infant sleep.

This formula mixing pitcher has 25K 5-star reviews—and it’s the best $9 I spent as a new mom https://www.mother.ly/baby/baby-feeding-guides-schedules/formula-mixer-pitcher-review/ Fri, 29 Jul 2022 19:31:11 +0000 https://www.mother.ly/?p=115914 Mixing baby formula is an underrated annoyance. Once you get the point of selecting a baby formula that’s right for your child, and even being able to find it in stores, you have to mix it, and for the uninitiated, it can be a bubbly, clumpy mess. No one tells you about the formula mixer that exists to make your life easier.

I remember the first month of serving formula to my daughter; it seemed like there was nothing I could do to make that formula mix well. I tried stirring it with a spoon, whirling it with a chopstick, and even used one of those doo-dads for making the milk for your coffee foamy at home. Each time it was a clumpy, powdery mess with bubbles I couldn’t get rid of. It was just one more thing that made me feel like I was doing something wrong as a new mom. But luckily I had a mom friend who saved me from this the way I can save you: with the Dr. Brown’s formula mixing pitcher.

Dr. Brown’s formula mixing pitcher does one thing, and it does one thing very well: it mixes formula to its smooth, well-blended potential, in mere seconds. And, because it’s a 32 oz. vessel, you can make multiple servings at once, vs. just one bottle at a time (especially helpful not only if you’re busy during the day, but also if you have a caretaker that you want to pre mix the formula for). Oh, and even though it conveniently can make multiple bottles at once, it’s still petite enough to fit in your bag for when you travel. (Speaking of traveling with this thing, you’ll also want to scoop up the equally indispensable Dr. Brown’s formula dispenser, which you scoop individual formula powder servings into, at a cool $4.99 a pop!)

How to make baby formula using Dr. Brown’s formula mixing pitcher

To use the formula mixing pitcher, you simply measure out the proportions of baby formula and water for the amount of servings you want. Add them both to the pitcher, water first, then formula (believe me on that point after my own trial and error—it won’t be as smooth). You put the special lid on with the stirring mechanism intact, then once in place, pump up and down. The center piece (the “blade” as the brand calls it) mixes the baby formula evenly into the water, making the perfect consistency for your babe to drink, with minimal formula bubbles (which can sometimes cause gas in babies).

Pour out into your baby bottle of choice, and then refrigerate the rest for when it’s time to feed baby again (a word to the wise: the pre-mixed formula can last for the rest of the day in the fridge). The lid is also somehow great at never spilling—which, as we all know, spilled formula is absolutely worth crying over.

At $9, there’s a shortlist of baby supplies that are so cheap and brilliant you can’t recommend them enough, and even though the mixing pitcher is on that list for me, I’m always surprised by how many new formula-feeding mons haven’t heard of it—or quite, often, who have seen it or heard of it, but don’t know how much easier it’ll make their day. It’s also dishwasher safe (top rack only, of course) and BPA free.

Can you get by without a formula mixer? Of course you can. But you don’t have to. With all the things that can make caring for a baby a struggle, this is one thing that can help smooth out an annoying (and sometimes messy!) task.
